Do I Need a Coach?

A coach, an advisor, a manager, a mentor…guidance comes in many forms. Depending where you are in your life, you may be facing a challenge that has you asking, “Do I need help? Can a coach help me?”.

This moment could happen if you’re a business owner, or considering taking on a new business venture, and wondering if you could benefit from a business coach. Being a business owner often feels like you’re running a sprint, within a triathlon, with a barrel of monkeys in one hand, and a shark tank in the other…with gremlins nipping at your heels. While this is an exaggerated metaphor, there are days in a business owner’s journey that feel nothing short of chaotic.

Alternatively, you may find yourself in a position of change in your personal or professional life, and considering how a life coach could support your transition. You may not know what to do to move forward, or maybe you’re struggling with a certain aspect of your personal or professional journey that’s holding you back from obtaining the goals in front of you. There’s a myriad of excuses you may tell yourself; you’re not strong enough, not brave enough, not smart enough, don’t have enough time, can’t get everything done, and so on. These are false beliefs that we allow ourselves to embody instead of facing the truth that the only thing holding us back is our own fear of failure.

We face some pretty monumental challenges in our lives. While some challenges are meant to be faced alone, most challenges only benefit from additional supporting roles. We have covered two high-level scenarios that would warrant additional support, so we now understand that a coach can and should be considered in moments when we face adversity and growth opportunities.

In order to understand whether or not you and your journey could benefit from partnering with a coach, the focus should be on the results of the partnership instead of the catalyst for your consideration; meaning, instead of focusing on what led you to consider partnering with a coach, you should focus on the results you could benefit from through the partnership. Let’s take a look at 10 results you should expect from partnering with a coach.

1) Clarity

It is all too easy to get blinded by your day to day grind and to lose sight of end goals. Sometimes it's a miracle to just be able to recognize that you need help, and sometimes it is past the point of no return. Partnering with a coach will help to provide clarity as to what your root issues are, and how to move forward from them.

2) Ease

When facing challenges alone, you are responsible for the success or failure of that challenge. Depending on the gravity of the challenge, that can prove to be incredibly overwhelming and difficult. Teaming up with a coach provides ease into your journey, allowing you to enjoy the process with a guided view.

3) Accountability

Anyone can make a plan or set a goal, but without accountability, it will never get done. Even the most disciplined people struggle from time to time. Having an experienced coach on your side ensures you are held accountable for a steady progression and an oversight on your goals.

4) Unbiased Scope

Visualizing and maintaining a big picture view of life is a constant chess match. The longer you play, and the more unnecessary moves you make, the harder it becomes to manage the multiplying variables. As a third-party observer, a coach provides you with an unbiased scope, ensuring a sustainable, evolving perspective. This brings a big-picture view to the table, allowing you to take the match in 21 moves, obliterating your competition.

5) Organization

When facing something new, it can often seem impossible to figure out where to start. In those moments, no amount of to-do lists or whiteboards can help you. In fact, they will only make matters worse if you don’t have a starting point, by further overwhelming you with endless, often pointless, options. Partnering with a coach will provide you with a roadmap to success, by organizing the scope of your journey.

6) Prioritization

Organization is only half the battle when mapping out your journey and categorization can only get you so far. Needing to know what to prioritize is the main concern for knowing how to move forward. From there you will determine and establish low to high priorities with your coach: revealing your starting point, ending point, and everything in between of your journey.

7) Growth Mindset

Working with a coach on a consistent basis will enable you to embody a growth mindset throughout all life's aspects. With every challenge that you can overcome. you are learning first and third-hand lessons when working with a coach. Whereas if you face all challenges alone, you are only learning first-hand lessons and not objectively seeing the big-picture.

8) Support

It is much easier to enjoy the process of change when we have complete and total support from day one of our journey. Having an experienced coach on your side supporting your every step allows you to be present and be your most authentic self. Through the wins, opportunities, and everything in between, your coach will be there to support you.

9) Confidence

There aren’t many opportunities in life to receive real-time feedback, support and accountability. In the absence of these things, however, it is common to be derailed by doubt, imposter syndrome, or fear. Working with a coach will build your confidence by providing the tools you need to be successful and empowered.

10) Sustainability

Perhaps the most important result of working with a coach is the set of tools you receive that you will carry through the rest of your life; the lessons and methodologies. Every interaction you have with a coach contains a teachable moment, and a lesson to be learned. Each lesson you learn, you will take with you and apply forward. A coach won’t build your house for you, they will provide you with the tools, knowledge, and support you need to build it yourself.

One of the best kept secrets of success is to surround yourself with a strong support system. We are rarely meant to face our challenges and  adversities alone. Partnering with a coach on your personal and/or professional journey will allow you to utilize the 10 results you should seek in your coach. When armed with such an arsenal, the only thing left to do is be present and grateful for the experience.

When you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here for you.
