Goals vs. Tasks - Part IV
Last post, we started reworking our simple goal of a promotion to a refined goal that would allow for a flourishing and budding new path in your life. When we dived into our second SMART goal, we determined a lot of its potential was already in motion and our name was already being on the short-list of replacements for that role. Does this mean we just kick back and wait for our goal to achieve itself? Absolutely not.
An easy task to get us started could be to verify our desired pay increase of 10% is within our grasp. This task could involve simply verifying the pay rate on GlassDoor and comparing it to our current pay in order to determine if the difference constitutes our desired 10% increase. Or, we may have to dig deeper and set up another meeting with Human Resources. If we find out the standard percent raise between our current role and our desired role is only 7%, the subsequent task could be to explore additional training and/or certifications that would increase our pay rate, and inevitably close the gap.
Another potential task to secure the success of our goal may be to treat the current VP to lunch to pick their brain on what makes a successful VP of Sales, what they foresee as the biggest upcoming challenges, and how they got to the role they’re in today. Tapping into our network of connections is one of the easiest ways to learn and gain invaluable insights into what it takes to not only achieve that role we desire, but how to successfully retain and grow within that role.
If we really want to shine and make a name for ourselves, another task could be to talk to everyone on the Sales team to determine what’s working, where are the opportunities, and how the company can better set the Sales team up for success. Then, put a plan in place to make those improvements. Present the plan to the current VP to secure executive buy-in, and ask for their blessing to start implementing the plan today. The best way to prove we are worthy of this role is to walk the walk. Talk is cheap, and everyone has something to say. But it is those who take action that emerge victorious on the other side.
Achieving success isn’t as far off as you may think. I challenge you to start making that change in your life today by writing down one ideal you’d like to achieve. Work that ideal through the SMART goal model and refine it to a comprehensive goal. Then, establish each task you need to take, from now, through your established goal timeline. Don’t just write out what you think you need to accomplish. Really push yourself to set the details in motion, and set yourself up for success. From there, let your GRIT and determination light the way.
When you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here for you.
