An Optimist & A Realist Walk Into A Bar

Stop me if you've heard this one before: an optimist and a realist walk into a bar. This may sound like the beginning of a joke, but it's actually a scenario that business owners often find themselves in. As a business owner, it's important to balance the optimism of chasing your dreams with the realism of the difficulties that come with running a business. In walks the optimist, full of enthusiasm and hope for the future. They're ready to take on any challenge that comes their way and are confident that they can achieve their goals. Then, in walks the realist, grounded in practicality and aware of the obstacles that lie ahead. They're cautious about taking risks and believe that success comes from careful planning and hard work. The battle of perspectives begins as the optimist and the realist discuss their differing approaches to business.

The optimist argues that a positive attitude and a willingness to take risks are key to success, allowing one to seize opportunities and overcome obstacles. One positive impact of optimism in business is increased motivation and productivity. When business owners have a positive outlook, they are more likely to be motivated to achieve their goals. This can lead to increased productivity and a willingness to take risks that can lead to innovation and growth. Another positive impact of optimism is that it can lead to better relationships with customers and employees. When business owners maintain a positive outlook, they are more likely to be empathetic and supportive, which can help build trust and loyalty among their customers and employees. On the other hand, optimism can also have negative impacts on businesses. For example, it can lead to overconfidence and complacency. Business owners who are overly optimistic may fail to consider potential risks or challenges, leading to poor decision-making and ultimately, failure. While pondering the pros and cons of the optimist, the realist is already using the optimist’s potential downfalls as their strengths in approaches.

The realist counters that careful planning and risk management are essential to avoid failure, highlighting the importance of being aware of potential pitfalls and taking steps to mitigate them. The positive impact of realism in business is that it helps business owners focus on achievable goals and identify potential obstacles that may hinder success. By taking a realistic approach, business owners can make informed decisions that are grounded in data and evidence, rather than relying on assumptions or guesswork. Conversely, a hyper-focus on realism can lead to a pessimistic outlook, which can be demotivating for employees and hinder the overall success of the business. Additionally, the negative impact of realism in business is that it can sometimes lead to a lack of creativity and innovation. A focus on practicality and objectivity can stifle new ideas and limit the potential for growth.

Both sides have valid points, but can they really have it all? In reality, it is a delicate balance between the two perspectives that leads to success. While a positive attitude can be helpful in maintaining motivation and perseverance, care must also be taken to assess risks and plan accordingly. Similarly, while careful planning can help to mitigate impactful variables, it is important to remain open to new opportunities and be willing to adapt as circumstances change. But, how can you find and maintain this critical balance? This will look different from person to person, but the high level answer is to practice both mindsets actively. In those moments of optimism - ideas, creative development, excitement, passion - STOP, take a walk to clear your mind, then come back and document the reality of what’s in front of you; take a realistic approach in order to make informed decisions that are grounded in data and evidence. In those moments of realism - risk aversion, analytical approaches, numerical driven data - STOP, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself, “what would the optimist do?”; have a positive attitude and a willingness to take risks in order to seize opportunities and overcome obstacles.

As a business owner, it's important to find the right balance between optimism and realism. Having a positive attitude and a willingness to take risks can help you achieve your goals, but it's also important to be realistic about the challenges and obstacles that lie ahead. Achieving this balance requires a driven dedication to practicing both mindsets as compliments to one another. With the right support, at the right time, from the right people, you can achieve this delicate balance on the road less traveled.
